How the Female Body Shape Calculator Works

The calculator makes three comparisons: how your bust compares with your hip, how far your waist sits inside both, and, if you enter it, how your high hip compares with your waist and hip.

Those three comparisons decide whether you are an hourglass (or its top or bottom variant), a pear, a spoon, an inverted triangle, a rectangle or an apple. The method comes from Lee, Istook, Nam and Park (2007), building on the Female Figure Identification Technique. The exact cut-offs are on the body type calculator page, and the outlines you see beside the tool are drawn from your own numbers.

Your result also shows the reasoning: which differences pointed to your shape, and how many inches one measurement would need to change to land you in the next one. If you want the bigger picture of all eight shapes on one chart, see the body shapes guide.

Fit Problems and Fixes by Female Body Shape

Shape shows up most clearly in how clothes fit. These are common patterns, not rules, and the size you wear depends on the brand. Each shape links to its own guide with measurements and styling.

Common patterns. Bodies and brands vary, and a good tailor can fix most of these.
ShapeFit problem you may noticeWhat often helps
HourglassA gap at the waistband of straight-cut trousers, and shirts that pull at the bust while hanging loose at the waist.Stretch fabric, curvy-fit or contoured waistbands, wrap styles, and taking in the waist.
Top hourglassShirt buttons that gape at the bust, and skirts or trousers that feel roomy next to the top.Stretch or wrap tops, a shirt sized for the bust and taken in at the waist, and separates in different sizes.
Bottom hourglassTrousers that fit the hips but gap at the waist, and tops that fit the bust but feel snug across the hips.Stretch denim with a curved waistband, a higher rise, and tops with a longer or flared hem.
PearA waist gap when trousers fit the hips, and dresses that fit the hips but hang loose on top.Buying for the hip and taking in the waist, separates in different sizes, stretch, and a higher rise.
SpoonPockets and seams that flare at the high hip, and trousers that pull across the shelf.Flat-front trousers, fluid fabric over the high hip, a mid to high rise, and tailoring at the waist.
Inverted triangleJackets and shirts that feel tight across the shoulders and back, and trousers that hang loose at the hips.Stretch or raglan sleeves, jackets with room at the shoulder, and bottoms sized separately and taken in.
RectangleLittle waist definition, so cuts made to nip in can look boxy, and belts that slide down.Darts, wrap or belted styles if you want shape, straight cuts if you prefer a column, and mostly length changes.
AppleWaistbands that dig or roll at the middle, and tops that ride up at the front.Empire and A-line cuts, stretch waistbands, tops with a longer front hem, and sizing for the widest point.

When One Inch Changes Your Shape

Shapes are drawn with sharp lines, and bodies are not. A shift of a single inch (about 2.5 cm), which is well within normal measuring error, can move you into the next shape. If you sit near a boundary, do not treat the label as permanent.

Bust-waist-hip in inches, each worked out with the same rules as the calculator.

32-32-34RectangleWaist 32 to 33Apple

That is why your result shows the "how close" line. Measure twice, keep the tape snug but not tight, and read the neighbouring shape as well as your own. The body measurements guide shows every measuring point.

Which Body Shape Is Best for a Woman?

None. A body shape describes proportion, not health, fitness or worth. Ideals change with era and culture, and the hourglass is often held up as the "best" simply because fashion and media have favoured it. In studies of women's body scans, the rectangle is usually reported as the most common shape and the hourglass as one of the least common, so most women do not match the ideal at all.

A more useful question is which shape you have and what that means for the clothes you buy. If you are curious about health markers, the waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio are used for screening at any shape; see the waist to hip ratio calculator. If thinking about your shape is causing you distress or affecting how you eat, a doctor or counsellor can help.

Female Body Shape Calculator FAQ

What is my female body shape (or body type)?
Enter your bust, waist and hip, and your high hip if you can. The calculator matches you to one of eight shapes: hourglass, top hourglass, bottom hourglass, pear, spoon, inverted triangle, rectangle or apple, and explains what decided it.
Is this a body shape calculator for women?
Yes. It is built for women's proportions and names the eight women's shapes. If you are looking for the men's version, use the male body shape calculator.
How do I calculate my female body shape?
Measure your bust, waist, hip and, if you can, your high hip, then enter them above. The calculator compares bust with hip, checks how far the waist sits inside both, and uses the high hip to find a spoon. The result shows the reasoning and the closest neighbouring shape.
Is a body type calculator female the same as a body shape calculator female?
For clothes and styling, yes: both mean your shape from bust, waist and hip. "Body type" is also used for build (ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph), which is a separate system explained in the body types guide.
Which body shape is best for female?
There is no best shape. Shape describes proportion, and every shape is normal. See the section above for why the hourglass gets so much attention.
How accurate is a female body shape calculator?
It is accurate for the numbers you enter, but the shapes have sharp cut-offs and bodies do not. A one-inch change can move you into the next shape, so read the "how close" line and measure carefully.
Do I need my high hip measurement?
It is optional, but it is the one number that separates a spoon from a pear or bottom hourglass. Without it, a spoon can be reported as a pear or bottom hourglass.
Why did I get a different result when I measured again?
Small differences in where you place the tape, how tight it is, and whether you breathe out can add up to an inch. If your first result was near a boundary, the second can land on the other side.
Can I be between two shapes?
Yes. Many women sit near a boundary, and the result shows the closest neighbouring shape and how many inches away it is.
Does body shape depend on weight?
Shape depends on proportion, so the same shape appears at very different sizes. Weight change can move your measurements and sometimes your result.
What is a good waist-to-hip ratio for a woman?
The WHO uses 0.85 as the point where health risk increases for women. It is a screening ratio, not a diagnosis, and it does not say anything about how attractive or healthy a shape is.
How can I find my body shape without a tape measure?
Stand in fitted clothes in front of a mirror and compare your shoulders, waist and hips, or load an example above to see how numbers turn into a shape. The body shapes guide has a mirror check.
