How the Female Body Shape Calculator Works
The calculator makes three comparisons: how your bust compares with your hip, how far your waist sits inside both, and, if you enter it, how your high hip compares with your waist and hip.
Those three comparisons decide whether you are an hourglass (or its top or bottom variant), a pear, a spoon, an inverted triangle, a rectangle or an apple. The method comes from Lee, Istook, Nam and Park (2007), building on the Female Figure Identification Technique. The exact cut-offs are on the body type calculator page, and the outlines you see beside the tool are drawn from your own numbers.
Your result also shows the reasoning: which differences pointed to your shape, and how many inches one measurement would need to change to land you in the next one. If you want the bigger picture of all eight shapes on one chart, see the body shapes guide.
Fit Problems and Fixes by Female Body Shape
Shape shows up most clearly in how clothes fit. These are common patterns, not rules, and the size you wear depends on the brand. Each shape links to its own guide with measurements and styling.
| Shape | Fit problem you may notice | What often helps |
|---|---|---|
| Hourglass | A gap at the waistband of straight-cut trousers, and shirts that pull at the bust while hanging loose at the waist. | Stretch fabric, curvy-fit or contoured waistbands, wrap styles, and taking in the waist. |
| Top hourglass | Shirt buttons that gape at the bust, and skirts or trousers that feel roomy next to the top. | Stretch or wrap tops, a shirt sized for the bust and taken in at the waist, and separates in different sizes. |
| Bottom hourglass | Trousers that fit the hips but gap at the waist, and tops that fit the bust but feel snug across the hips. | Stretch denim with a curved waistband, a higher rise, and tops with a longer or flared hem. |
| Pear | A waist gap when trousers fit the hips, and dresses that fit the hips but hang loose on top. | Buying for the hip and taking in the waist, separates in different sizes, stretch, and a higher rise. |
| Spoon | Pockets and seams that flare at the high hip, and trousers that pull across the shelf. | Flat-front trousers, fluid fabric over the high hip, a mid to high rise, and tailoring at the waist. |
| Inverted triangle | Jackets and shirts that feel tight across the shoulders and back, and trousers that hang loose at the hips. | Stretch or raglan sleeves, jackets with room at the shoulder, and bottoms sized separately and taken in. |
| Rectangle | Little waist definition, so cuts made to nip in can look boxy, and belts that slide down. | Darts, wrap or belted styles if you want shape, straight cuts if you prefer a column, and mostly length changes. |
| Apple | Waistbands that dig or roll at the middle, and tops that ride up at the front. | Empire and A-line cuts, stretch waistbands, tops with a longer front hem, and sizing for the widest point. |
When One Inch Changes Your Shape
Shapes are drawn with sharp lines, and bodies are not. A shift of a single inch (about 2.5 cm), which is well within normal measuring error, can move you into the next shape. If you sit near a boundary, do not treat the label as permanent.
| Numbers | Shape | One change | New shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32-28-35 | Rectangle | Hip 35 to 36 | Pear |
| 32-24-34 | Hourglass | Waist 24 to 25 | Rectangle |
| 35-27-34 | Rectangle | Bust 35 to 36 | Top hourglass |
| 37-30-34 | Rectangle | Bust 37 to 38 | Inverted triangle |
| 32-32-34 | Rectangle | Waist 32 to 33 | Apple |
| 32-26-35 | Rectangle | Hip 35 to 36 | Bottom hourglass |
That is why your result shows the "how close" line. Measure twice, keep the tape snug but not tight, and read the neighbouring shape as well as your own. The body measurements guide shows every measuring point.
Which Body Shape Is Best for a Woman?
None. A body shape describes proportion, not health, fitness or worth. Ideals change with era and culture, and the hourglass is often held up as the "best" simply because fashion and media have favoured it. In studies of women's body scans, the rectangle is usually reported as the most common shape and the hourglass as one of the least common, so most women do not match the ideal at all.
A more useful question is which shape you have and what that means for the clothes you buy. If you are curious about health markers, the waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio are used for screening at any shape; see the waist to hip ratio calculator. If thinking about your shape is causing you distress or affecting how you eat, a doctor or counsellor can help.
